The island of Maui is located 100 miles southeast of Oahu and Honolulu, and 25 miles northwest of the Big island. You can fly directly into Maui’s Kahului airport, bypassing a transfer in Honolulu which can save you time.
Maui is known as the Valley Isle, because of the flat sea level valley which connects the two island portions together in an isthmus formation. Kahului is located on one side of the valley and Kihei (key-hey) is located on the other side. Maui is the second most-developed island to Oahu. It has a sunny climate, many beaches and shopping and dining options yet can be dusty and windy in some locations, primarily in Kahului, Maalaea and Kihei. Above Kahului is an incredible upcountry area including Makawao, Kula with a winery and lodge and Haleakalā crater.
Lahaina Town is being rebuilt after the tragic fire of August 2023 that destroyed and most of it. But, there are still many businesses open and lots of things to do and see before and past Lahaina, in Kaanapali and beyond.
With very few rivers and streams, Maui offers incredible ocean visibility and aquatic life, and amazing boating experiences. Maui Humpback Whale watching (Nov-Apr), especially in the protected waters of coastline from Lahaina to Kihei, is a must see.
Maui also boasts a wide-variety of awesome activities, such as zip lines, atv’s, many ocean activities, air tours, hiking and much more. Plan to spend a day on an amazing trip to Hana, about 50, long and winding miles north of Kahului, for an experience you will not forget.
